Buying a Puppy
When shopping for a puppy, be sure to do your homework. While all puppies are cute, some breeds are not suited for everyone. Before you buy, research and understand the type and breed of dog that best fits your lifestyle.
Where To Buy
Please, NEVER buy from a pet store. 90% of a store's stock is obtained from puppy mills. A puppy mill's main goal is profit. The health of the breed is not their primary reason for being in business. Many mills keep their dogs in horrendous conditions and health issues are not uncommon (often resulting with the new owner making several trips to the vet for treatments).
A responsible breeder is your best bet to find a healthy, happy pupppy. The best place to talk to breeders and see many breeds in person is at a local dog show. You can check the on-line schedule at Infodog for a listing of shows in your area. Be wary of breeders who offer many breeds for sale. Find a breeder that specializes one or two breeds (especially yours).
Responsible Breeders
Responsible breeders plan their breedings by matching parents to bring out the best qualities of the breed and ensure healthy puppies. The will test their dogs for known health issues and not use any dog with health issues for breeding.
A responsible breeder will ask you several questions and in many cases will request that you visit their home. This allows them to meet you and you to meet their dogs. Make sure you interview the breeder as much as they interview you.
They should guarantee, in writing, the health and temperament of their dogs and agree to take them back at ANY time during it's life. They should be available to answer any questions you may have as well.
Rescue Dogs
You may also consider adopting a rescue dog. Many dogs are looking for a good home and come from a variety of circumstances.
Some rescues are from the original owner, who realizes that the breed of dog they purchased isn't for them. Some are given up after the owners start a family. Some are turned into shelters.
We have helped place many rescued dogs into happy homes. Every breed club supports some sort of dog rescue program and should be able to assist you.
And if the breed of dog isn't all that important to you, visit your local shelter. They too have many dogs deserving of a loving home.
